A design system is a complete set of standards intended to manage design at scale using reusable components and patterns.The standards & patterns define everything from colours and typography to motion and design thinking. These are then used as the base rules to create a library of reusable components, which can be assembled in any number of ways to create digital products.

“Design system” is a buzzword in the industry for sure. Design systems this, design system that, but it is for good reason. A system is an incredible tool to have, they come in all shapes and sizes, you’ve got big ones, small ones, unfinished ones, legacy ones, new shiny ones, corporate mega gargantuan crazy ones, but no matter their shape, they all exist for the same reasons. Those reasons are consistency and speed, these two beautiful concepts sum up why we use design systems.
Just take a second to imagine, one source of truth, accessible by everyone, and containing all the building blocks of your entire product, code and design in harmony, scaleable and yet simple. Now you’re back in the room, when everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet; designers, devs, pm’s, and even marketing, life is good.
